Thousands of works of art, millions of plant and animal specimens and the nation's largest congressional archive denote the depth and breadth of KU's extraordinary collections available for public viewing at no cost. KU is also home to renowned performing arts venues presenting music, dance and theater.

Performing Arts

Lied Center

The 2,000-seat concert hall hosts world-class artists in music, dance and theater; educational programs for children and adults; and University lectures and performances.

University Theatre

As part of its training of actors, directors and designers, the University Theatre program presents comedies, tragedies and musicals in the large Crafton-Preyer Theatre and the small Inge Theatre.

Bales Organ Recital Hall

One of the finest facilities in the country, every facet of the building provides optimum acoustical balance for the 35-foot-tall organ, built by Wolff and Associes-Ltee. of Laval, Quebec.

Swarthout Recital Hall

Faculty musicians, visiting artists and students give frequent recitals in Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall. Chamber music and solo and ensemble performances also are presented in this intimate setting.

The Robert Baustian Theatre

The Robert Baustian Theatre is home to many KU Opera performances, and also serves as a space for opera rehearsals, auditions and voice exams.

Museums

Booth Family Hall of Athletics

Adjacent to Allen Fieldhouse, this all-sports museum includes the Fieldhouse's original center court floor, national championship trophies, and memorabilia from Chamberlain, Naismith, and more.

Dole Institute of Politics

The institute encourages both historical scholarship and fresh thinking about public policy issues and promotes greater student and citizen involvement in the democratic process.

Natural History Museum

Research inventories of 7 million plant and animal specimens including huge fossils of Cretaceous period sea creatures from Kansas and a historic diorama of North American mammals.

Spencer Museum of Art

A comprehensive teaching collection of 22,000 works especially strong in Asian ceramics, prints and paintings; European and American paintings; photography; and a renowned quilt collection.

Spencer Museum of Art Printroom

The Max Kade-Erich H. Markel Department of Graphic Arts houses nearly 10,000 works on paper, including prints, drawings, photographs and artists' books.

Wilcox Classical Museum

This collection of replica statues, coins and artifacts remains a valuable aid for the appreciation of the traditions of the Greeks and Romans.

Galleries & Events

Art & Design Gallery

On the 3rd floor of the Art and Design Building, this exhibition space for students, faculty and visiting artists. Recent exhibits have encompassed painting, sculpture ceramics and textiles.

Hallmark Symposium Series

The Department of Design, supported by an endowment from Hallmark Cards, invites creative and articulate designers, writers, artists and educators to speak at the Spencer Museum of Art, often in conjunction with special exhibits.

KU History Galleries

Located on each level of the Kansas Union, the KU History Galleries and displays bring to light various aspects of the University's rich history, such as KU's first faculty, the Rock Chalk Chant, Lost Traditions and much more.
